Tennis

Wheelchair Tennis follows traditional tennis rules and certainly maintains the same traditions of high levels of skill, fitness and strategy. The only difference in wheelchair tennis competitions is that the players are allowed two bounces of the ball; the first bounce being within the bounds of the court. To be eligible for these competitions, the athlete must be medically diagnosed as having a mobility-related disability.

Players are classified on a skills basis in the following categories:

  • Open - Elite level players
  • A, B, C, D - Graded players
  • There is a separate division for quad players

2007 NSW Wheelchair Tennis Series all wrapped up

With the third of the 3-event series now complete, the 2007 NSW Wheelchair Tennis Series has now drawn to a close. The Series comprised of three ITF Futures events as part of the NEC wheelchair tennis tour;

  • 1. South Pacific Wheelchair Open (Sept 21-23)
  • 2. NSW Wheelchair Tennis Open (Nov 2-4)
  • 3. Newcastle Wheelchair Tennis Open Nov 30-Dec 2)

Featuring more than 50 athletes from all over Australia, New Zealand and Japan, the Series showcased the ever increasing standard of wheelchair tennis on Australian soil as players vied for ranking points in lead up for Beijing.

With the support of Major Sponsors – International Tennis Federation and Australian Athletes with a Disability – the 2007 Series has continued to raise the standard of wheelchair tennis tournaments in NSW.

The Series attracted widespread support for each Tournament. Regional Tennis Associations and Clubs (Shoalhaven and District Tennis Assoc, Tennis Wollongong and Newcastle Lake Macquarie Wheelchair Tennis Club) provided vital operational support in the production of draws, management of officials and coordination of ball people. Regional Sponsorships included from the Bomaderry Bowling Club, City of Wollongong Tennis Club, Lake Macquarie Council, and Wallsend Diggers. Local media coverage included regional newspapers, WIN TV and NBN News covering the Tournaments in their respective region.

In 2007, WS NSW proudly recognised three individuals for their ongoing voluntary commitment to the development and conduct of wheelchair tennis tournaments in NSW; Laurie Perkins (Shoalhaven), Wendy Saville (Wollongong) and Keith Jurd (Wollongong) were each inducted into the WS NSW Champion Hall of Fame. Laurie, Tournament Director for the South Pacific Open since its inception 10years ago, Wendy and Keith (Tournament Director / Referee), for the NSW Open since its beginnings 16years ago.

In conducting the series, many thanks are due to a large team of volunteers for their time and dedication to each Tournament. As the driving force behind delivery of the Series; volunteers assisted in areas of transport, catering, courtside, medical / massage, ball people and athlete services.

Tournament winners:

  Men’s Singles Women’s Singles
South Pacific Wheelchair Tennis Open Michael Connell Danni DiToro
NSW Wheelchair Tennis Open Michael Connell Naomi Ishimoto
Newcastle Wheelchair Tennis Open Michael Connell Danni DiToro

Thanks to each of the players for the entry; we wish you every success with your endeavours in 2008, and hope to see you all in NSW again at the Sydney International in February.
