WHAT IS IT?

A twenty minute presentation at your school, on road safety, disability awareness or physical activity and sport, by one of our presenters who lives with a disability, followed by a 40 minute game of Wheelchair Basketball or Wheelchair AFL, played by the students. This provides the students a chance to experience something new, as well as giving them an idea of what it is like to be in a wheelchair.

WHERE?

We’ll come to you. Just make sure you have an accessible undercover basketball court, multipurpose area, hall, or quadrangle.

TAMWORTH SCHOOLS: Our experiences are held at Tamworth Dome. Please call Catherine on 0429 922 108 to discuss availability.

SESSION SIZE?

We recommend groups of 20-25 per session as this maximises the time the students can experience playing sport in a wheelchair. We bring 10 wheelchairs with us on the day, and have portable hoops if you need them. If you have more than 25 students per session, please email us to discuss other options for your school.

TOTAL SESSION TIME?

Each session is one hour, with a minimum booking of two hours at your school. We are happy to work in with your school timetable. You need to factor recess and lunch times around the one-hour sessions. Teacher supervision is compulsory at all times.

SCHOOL TESTIMONIALS

"We had several staff come out from Wheelchair sports to run 5 seperate wheelchair basketball sessions for our students. They were informative, fun and the students throughly enjoyed the experience. It allowed our students to have snapshot of what some of the challenges some people face day to day in wheelchairs. We have used wheelchair sports for several years, and highly recommend them. Thank you again for 5 great sessions" - Kambala School, Rose Bay

"The students and teachers were very impressed with the way the program was delivered. Students thoroughly enjoyed the experience of participating in activities they would not normally experience. I would highly recommend this program to other schools looking to give their students an experience like this" - St Augustine's College, Brookvale

"Stephan was very engaging and accessible for the kids to get along with. He was personable and had great behaviour management skills. Students enjoyed interacting with Stephan and learning about the challenges other people face" - Mount Annan Christian College, Mount Annan

"Our school, being a country school have never had this experience and they loved it! Thank you for including the country kids that are so often forgotten for these types of experiences" Warialda High, Warialda

"When students get involved, they learn firsthand how important it is to include everyone, no matter their physical abilities and the difficulties faced by people with disabilities. A way to reinforce these values is through participation in wheelchair basketball. This experience linked to their current unit being studied in PDHPE based around accessible sports. and also made connections to a number of units studied in PASS and STEM. Students had a great time learning to play and interacting in different ways on a basketball court. We thank Wheelchair Sports NSW for providing this opportunity to our students"Rouse Hill Anglican College, Rouse Hill
